Clinical Research Fellowship

UC Irvine's Department of Dermatology offers a one- to two-year Clinical Research Fellowship. The research fellow is involved in a variety of clinical trials and research projects with faculty dermatologists. Clinical studies are both industry-sponsored clinical trials and investigator-initiated studies in areas of general dermatology, photomedicine, cutaneous cancer therapies, lasers and cosmetic devices. Fellows participate in study design, submission to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), implementation, presentation and publication of study results. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in departmental grand rounds and other academic activities.

Fellowship requirements include completion of a minimum of PGY1 at an ACGME accredited program prior to start of the fellowship and eligibility for a California medical license. Procedural Dermatology Fellowship Program

The Procedural Dermatology Fellowship at UC Irvine, is a one-year, ACGME-approved program that offers extensive training in Mohs surgery, advanced dermatologic surgery, laser surgery, and cosmetic dermatology.  Our program is very busy with a high patient load, complex tumor biology, advanced reconstructive procedures, and a broad exposure to laser and cosmetic procedures.

Mohs Surgery

The surgical portion of the program will be conducted at two sites: UC Irvine's Department of Dermatology and a Kaiser Permanente hospital. We currently have two faculty members trained at the American College of Mohs Surgery: Dr. Christopher Zachary and  Dr. John Martinez. Each physician received training in different fellowship programs, thus UC Irvine provides Mohs fellows with various perspectives and approaches to Mohs surgery, reconstruction and cutaneous oncology management.

Our surgical curriculum includes extensive hands-on experience in Mohs micrographic surgery. Incoming fellows are given graduated surgical responsibility as they refine surgical techniques and competence. Fellow are exposed to a variety of reconstructive methods, including second intention healing, primary closure, advanced skin flaps and grafts. The vast majority of the surgery sites are closed by our faculty. We also enjoy a close collaborative relationship with our colleagues in otolaryngology, plastic surgery and oculoplastic surgery. Our faculty members perform more than 1,800 Mohs procedures each year; each fellow typically performs about 700 cases as the primary surgeon.

Laser Surgery and Cosmetics

Our fellows has extensive experience in lasers for tattoo, hair, pigment and vessel removal, non-ablative and ablative laser resurfacing, fractional erbium and CO2 lasers, tissue tightening and fat removal devices. Fellows receive exposure and training in scar revision, chemical peels, sclerotherapy, endovenous ablation, liposuction and the use of botulinum toxin and various fillers. Fellows are involved in monthly hands-on cosmetic workshops taught jointly by department faculty and volunteer faculty members.

Research and Teaching

Our goal is to train fellows who contribute to the field long after completing their training. Each fellow has a half-day every week to devote to academic activities, including Dermatology Grand Rounds/Lectures, research projects and scholarly work. There also are opportunities to rotate with our volunteer faculty including Dr. Jeff Klein (liposuction) and Dr. Craig Ziering (hair transplantation). Fellows are expected to contribute to the training of dermatology residents and medical students, and are required to give a series of lectures relating to all aspects of dermatologic surgery. Fellows are expected to be involved in a research project and to present their data at a national dermatologic meeting. Our faculty members are committed to supporting any interests our fellows wish to pursue.

We are accepting applications for 2013 and will participate in the San Francisco match program; selection in November.

The application deadline is Sept. 1, 2012 for the August 2013 position.
