About the Department of Dermatology

The Department of Dermatology at UC Irvine's School of Medicine is committed to advancing clinical care, education and research to help patients with diverse dermatological conditions.

The department's world-class faculty is dedicated to preparing medical students and residents for careers in private practice and academia. Our vibrant educational program is designed to help residents and fellows treat the gamut of dermatologic conditions with conventional and ground breaking therapies, and to conduct sophisticated clinical development programs from basic pharmaceutical studies to phase III clinical trials.

The department's faculty is actively engaged in clinical, translational and basic research as principal investigators. Our faculty works in the Dermatology Clinical Research Center, which is involved in all phases of clinical testing, including Federal Drug Administration approval of investigational drugs and lasers, new indications for drugs, over-the-counter products and pharmaceuticals for cosmetic use. At UC Irvine, our dermatopathology laboratory provides expertise in the pathology of the skin. The lab serves community physicians and UC Irvine Medical Center as well as supporting departmental clinical and basic research protocols.

The Department of Dermatology has been transformed over the past 6 years, and is now nationally recognized as a leading program for clinical practice, research and teaching.  With10 faculty, 15 residents, 1 ACGME procedural fellow, and 1 clinical research fellow the program is well positioned to continue to develop further the educational mission of the program.

UC Irvine Dermatology is based in Irvine, but significantly has major elements at Kaiser Permanente and the Long Beach Veterans Administration Medical Center.  Five faculty are recognized as “2010 Best Doctors.” Specialty areas include the tertiary care for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer,  laser and aesthetic surgery, pigmented skin disorders, immunobullous diseases, psoriasis, pediatric skin disorders, and chronic venous disorders including varicose veins. Two new faculty have been hired recently, including Dr. Ron Harris, a nationally recognized dermatopathologist, and Dr. Jenny Soung, recently graduating from the UC Irvine dermatology program, whose job it will be to build the psoriasis, photobiology, clinical research and hospitalist programs.

Recent national awards (including Dr Sergei Grando with three RO1s), have boosted the department from last in the nation to above the 19th place in dermatology programs with federal funding. New national research awards to Dr Kelly (residency program director) and Dr Ganesan (FTE researcher/clinician) have helped them to continue to make major contributions to the department.

The SOS 11 clinical practice in Irvine has been quite successful, treating over 20,000 patients in South County since 2008 and attracting many of the self-pay and PPO patients in the area.  The 2011 projected clinical income is several million dollars above the budgeted target, with the only restraint for further clinical growth being the lack of available space.

The faculty, residents and staff of the department of dermatology are proud to be part of UC Irvine Healthcare, and look forward to building a better future for the health of those living in Southern California.
