Psoriasis Treatment and Research
For patients with extensive or difficult forms of psoriasis, the Psoriasis Treatment and Research Center is uniquely capable of providing state-of-the-art therapies. For more than 25 years, members of the Department of Dermatology faculty have been involved with research, clinical development and/or use of all the major forms of therapy available today for severe psoriasis. The appropriate selection of therapy depends on each patient's history of psoriasis, extent of involvement and past treatment. The knowledgeable physician must consider all of these variables in recommending a patient's therapy options. These treatments include:
- Topical Therapies
- Phototherapy (Photochemotherapy - PUVA)
- Modified Goeckerman Treatment (Phototherapy - UVB)
- Systemic Drug Therapies (Methotrexate, Tegison, Cyclosporine)
Members of our faculty have been involved in research with a number of drugs for psoriasis. Some of the drugs which are administered by mouth include Methotrexate, Tegison, Cyclosporine, and Photofrin (in combination with laser light). Many new medications for topical use have been designed and/or are tested here. At any time, we have several clinical trials ongoing in which patients can volunteer to participate in research studies.
The psoriasis patient remains the best model for studying this disease since there are no animal or adequate laboratory models for psoriasis. In addition to drug studies, we periodically ask some patients to provide us with skin and blood specimens for biochemical investigations.
Other skin diseases that have been studied in our clinical research programs include acne, atopic dermatitis, photodamaged/wrinkled skin, fungal diseases, actinic keratoses, and skin cancers.
For clinical research information, please call (949) 824-7103.
For an appointment as a private patient with psoriasis, call The Dermatology Center in Irvine at (949) 824-0606 or (714) 456-7070.
The National Psoriasis Foundation in Portland, Oregon is recommended as a source of additional information on other aspects of psoriasis. They also can provide you with information on local chapters in your area.
