Announcement

The new residency slots for 2010 have been filled.
 Thank you to everyone
  who applied.

                            The Application Process

Candidates must apply to the programs of their choice using the method accepted by the program. Most programs participate in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). A few programs may use their own application or the Universal Application for Residency (PDF, 6 pages). Applicants also are responsible for ensuring that they meet all program prerequisites and institutional policies regarding eligibility for appointment to a residency position prior to ranking a program through the NRMP. In particular, non-U.S. citizens should inquire about visas accepted by the institution.

ERAS is the Electronic Residency Application Service developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges to transmitelectronically the residency applications, personal statements, recommendation letters, deans' letters, transcripts, and other supporting credentials from medical schools to residency program directors. The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG®) serves as the ERAS coordinator for foreign medical graduates. See the ERAS Web site for more information.

Please note: Registering with ERAS does not register applicants with the NRMP nor does registering with the NRMP register applicants for ERAS.

The Application

Candidates should review carefully the eligibility requirements when applying to residency programs. For example, one consideration for applicants living abroad is that many programs require on-site interviews. Applications should be submitted as early as possible in order to accommodate deadlines for supporting documents and interview schedules. Late applications may not be considered. Do not send any program applications or the Universal Application for Residency to the NRMP.

Candidates also should review carefully application materials to determine if the program requires applicants to enroll in the NRMP to obtain residency positions.

Residency Match

The NRMP Main Match provides an impartial venue for matching applicants' preferences for residency positions with program directors' preferences for applicants. Each year approximately 16,000 allopathic medical school seniors and 15,000 graduates of osteopathic, Canadian or foreign medical schools compete for approximately 24,000 residency positions.

There are four categories of programs participating in the Match:

Categorical - programs that begin in the PGY-1 year and provide the training required for board certification in medical specialties.

Advanced - programs that begin in the PGY-2 year after a year of prerequisite training.

Preliminary - one-year programs beginning in the PGY-1 year that provide prerequisite training for advanced programs.

Physician - programs that are reserved for physicians who have had prior graduate medical education. Physician programs are not available to senior medical students.

The NRMP is not an application service or a job placement service. Applicants must apply directly to residency programs in addition to registering for the Match. Most programs participate in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), which transmits residency applications to program directors via the Internet. Applicants must register with both NRMP and ERAS to participate in the services of each.

Program Basics

Kristen Kelly, MD, Program Director

Objectives
The three years of approved residency training are intended to prepare physicians for the practice of Dermatology and fulfill the requirements of the American Board of Dermatology, Inc., and the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Dermatology.

Positions Available
We currently support fifteen residents.

Facilities
The UC Irvine Medical Center is a 400 bed acute care hospital in Orange, California. It is part of the University of California hospital system and is staffed by university faculty physicians. The Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach (VAMCLB) has 400 beds. This medical center is one of the major teaching campuses of the UCI Medical School and is staffed by UCI faculty. Dermatology inpatients are cared for at both the VAMCLB and UCI Medical Centers. Programs at both hospitals are fully integrated.

The Dermatology Training Program is a three-year accredited residency utilizing facilities of the VAMCLB, Kaiser Permanente,  and the UCI Medical Center. Outpatients are seen at the UCI Medical Center, Kaiser Perrnanente Clinics, VA Medical Center, Student Health Center of UCI, and UCI Clinical Practice's offices in Irvine and Orange. Approximately 25,000 outpatient visits are seen annually in the combined program.

The training program is a well-rounded experience, permitting the serious student to become proficient in clinical and surgical dermatology and involved in areas of dermatologic research. Residents will become involved in basic and/or clinical research projects in association with the faculty for 4 months during the second year. Research facilities including well-equipped laboratories, offices and a library are found at the UCI campus, UCI Medical Center and the VA Medical Center. The dermatology program includes training in all standard dermatologic treatment modalities including cutaneous surgery, ultraviolet therapy (UVB and PUVA,) and laser procedures.

Dermatopathology is a significant part of the program and all residents rotate through the Dermatopathology Service.

Education
A structured basic science and clinical education program is conducted each Tuesday morning. This instruction encompasses all areas for which residents are examined by the American Board of Dermatology, Inc.  Didactic lectures are followed by a dermatopathology multi-headed microscope teaching session.

Clinical conferences include weekly grand rounds alternating between the VAMCLB & UCIMC, monthly departmental Dowling club meetings and  quarterly meetings of the Dermatologic Society of Orange County.  The second and third year residents attend the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology and other meetings pertinent to their research.

Faculty of the Department of Dermatology
There are currently eight full-time faculty in the Department of Dermatology. The faculty are as follows:

Anand Ganesan, M.D., Ph.D. - Assistant Professor of Dermatology. Dr. Ganesan specializes in the clinical research in melanoma and currently sees patients at the Gottschalk Plaza on the UCI Campus and the UCIMC.

Basic Cutaneous Surgery. Christopher B. Zachary FRCP
Basic Cutaneous Surgery was first published some years ago with some personal considerations concerning dermatologic surgery and tissue manipulation. It is not rocket science, but  did sell out and colleagues have been plaguing me since then to release a second edition.  So, I am happy to provide this brief text free of charge to those who wish to learn about the basics of dermatologic surgery.

I am currently updating this and will upload chapters as they become complete!

I would only ask if anyone has an original copy of the book that they might consider selling it back to me!   All my personal copies disappeared.  Such is life .....
