Dr. Weinstein was  Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology from 1979 to March 2001. From 1985-87 he was the Acting Dean of the UCI College of Medicine. Dr. Weinstein earned his B.A. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.

He retired in 2004 and is now a Professor Emeritus and continues to see patients, teach and do clinical research.

From 1962-64 he served as a Clinical Associate in Dermatology at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He did his residency in dermatology at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Weinstein was a NIH Special Postdoctoral Fellow in 1965-66.

Prior to joining UCI, Dr. Weinstein was on the faculty in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Miami School of Medicine from 1966-1979. He also was a visiting professor at St. John's Dermatology Institute at the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St. Thomas Hospital in London, England in 1993.

Dr. Weinstein is an editorial consultant for Archives of Dermatology, Journal of Investigative Dermatology, Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, and other journals. He has been on the Boards of Directors of numerous national organizations such as the American Academy of Dermatology, National Psoriasis Foundation and the Society of Investigative Dermatology. In 1993, Dr. Weinstein received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Research and Service in Psoriasis from the National Psoriasis Foundation.

Dr. Weinstein has many patents in his name and has conducted extensive research into the understanding of hyperproliferative skin diseases, such as psoriasis, ichthyosis, and skin cancer. His studies have included the kinetics of cellular proliferation in these diseases, biochemical aspects of the DNA synthesis pathways and the mechanism of action of chemotherapeutic drugs to provide beneficial or therapeutic effects in these diseases. Current research involves the field of dermatopharmacology with the development of new drugs for psoriasis.
