Dr. Zachary hails from Yorkshire, England. Following his medical school education at the Royal Free Hospital, University of London, he subsequently trained in Internal Medicine and Dermatology. During his time at the Institute of Dermatology, Guys and St. Thomas' Hospitals, he gained an interest in Dermatologic Surgery. His formal surgical education was received at the Department of Dermatology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. He returned to the UK in 1985 to set up the first Mohs and Laser Surgery unit in London.
Dr. Zachary takes on challenging skin cancer cases where he utilizes Mohs micrographic surgery and subsequent repair with dermatoplastic reconstructive surgery. He commonly lectures on these subjects.
He is an expert in the laser removal of port wine stains, telangiectases, and other cutaneous pigmentary anomalies. He performs numerous cosmetic procedures including erbium YAG laser resurfacing for photoaged skin, Fraxel, Smoothbeam, CoolTouch and pulsed-dye laser non-ablative rejuvenation, liposuction and fat transfer, collagen and hyaluronic acid fillers, BOTOX, and treatment of varicose veins including endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy. Dr. Zachary has published many articles on diseases of the skin, both research and clinical, and is a regular contributor to academic meetings both in the USA and abroad. Over the years, Dr. Zachary has served on numerous editorial boards and national committees, directed many national and international meetings, and has presented more than 200 papers in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Zachary has written or edited more than 70 articles, books, book chapters, reports, and abstracts.
He has pioneered microscopic detection of skin cancer by rapid immunocytochemistry in frozen sections. With his colleague Dr. Sergei Grando, he has cultured the first "immortal" basal cell cancer cell lines. His interest in lasers has led to significant industry supported research in optimal laser systems for cutaneous surgery, and the development of new laser systems for facial rejuvenation. With his friend and colleague Dr. Roy Grekin, he co-chaired the popular Lasers in Cutaneous and Cosmetic Surgery courses held in San Francisco, Minneapolis and London. He founded the online educational programs www.mdlive.net and www.cme.md. Recently he was President of the Association of Academic Dermatologic Surgeons.
Academic Appointments: From 1988 to 1997 he joined the Department of Dermatology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA, where he became a tenured Associate Professor and Director of the Cutaneous Surgery and Laser Center. He was elected to the University Senate and chaired the Ambulatory Services Committee. Dr. Zachary has been an expert witness before State Committees and served on numerous local and national task forces. In 1997 he was appointed as Clinical Professor and Co-Director of the Cutaneous Surgery and Laser Center, UCSF, San Francisco, California where he enjoyed a 9 year association with one of the best programs in the county.
Dr. Zachary was appointed as Chair to the Department of Dermatology, University of California at Irvine in July 2005. In his new role as departmental chairman, he is determined to make UCI Derm one of the top programs in the nation. He is currently in heavy recruiting mode for both clinical and research faculty.
